Writing fiction is a bit like baking a cake. You need the proper ingredients in the right amounts, or it will turn out dreadful. For fiction, you need the ideal combination of plot, action, description and personality development to bring your story to life for your own reader.
Character growth can be one of the most important things about science fiction. You want to create a realistic set of characters to move your plot together and to do that you want to understand them. But how much can you really have to know about these before you start writing?
Well, that depends on the kind of story you’re writing. The period of your tale will dictate the quantity of character information you’ll need to create them come to life. For simplicity sake, I’ve broken my personality sheet down into what I use for each kind of writing. Your character sheets might vary.
Fiction is an integral part of individual life. Man has an inherent need for diversion to get away, even though for a few minutes, in the temptations of life. Story telling has been among the earliest methods for accomplishing that and over the ages it has become the varied types of entertainment we’ve got in today’s world. Entertainment is essentially of two kinds – active and passive. The active involves physical participation in one manner or other, while the passive does not. Fiction is basically a passive amusement even though the brain plays an important role in it. Fiction constantly involves visualization whether it’s covert or overt. The earliest form of overt visualization has been the enacting of dramas since the civilizations developed. The growth of technology introduced in its contemporary forms – theater and tv. The covert form is inherent to story telling and reading. It is an inherent characteristic of the individual (or maybe any) mind that a notion is always accompanied by an image. So as soon as one reads or hears a story the mind visualizes the scene as well as the characters; this process continues throughout the story and frequently even after it’s finished.
Fiction by its very definition is unreal. When we read a novel we are aware that the narrative and the characters in it are merely a product of imagination of the author. When we see a movie we are aware that the characters are only acting their parts basically pretending to be someone besides themselves. Still we are emotionally affected by the turns and twists in the narrative. We laugh, weep together, and also feel indignant towards the bad men. The adorable hero or heroine might be despicable in real life and the villain may be a perfect gentleman, but we identify them using the characters they’re portraying. In essence for that brief period we ourselves get transported to the imaginary world of the writer. Strangely enough this happens too with the writer at least to some of these. He or she travels through the very same emotions while writing and possibly later as well. “Knowledge is limited, imagination is not.” Albert Einstein explained that although the wording of the second part might have been different. Einstein like any other human being wasn’t infallible. Some of his views he held right until the ending turned out to be wrong even within the field of physics. In this particular statement he also seems to have it backwards. Knowledge may be limited in the case of someone but in general it is unlimited even when we believe just logical knowledge leaving aside transcendental. Science in particular has shown this at each step in the course of its development. Imagination pertains to a single thoughts and can be constrained by numerous things depending on the situation of the individual. A mind can envision only what relates in a way to things already stored inside. Someone who has been outside a distant location in jungle and has no contact with the world outside cannot imagine what metropolitan cities are like.
Getting back to fiction the creativity of the author also must be predicated on his direct or indirect encounters. In this sense fiction is based on reality and to this extent it represents another dimension of truth. Here of course we run to the philosophical difficulty of the precise significance of reality. There are two diametrically opposite viewpoints – materialistic and spiritualistic. In accordance with the prior only things that can be perceived through our perceptions are real, everything else is unreal. The latter asserts that there is just one ultimate reality from which we perceive comes out and what that is perceived is simply an illusion. We again look at a statement by Einstein: “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.” He was obviously referring to the reality of the phenomenal world. The term illusion can have different connotations but generally it means perceiving something rather different from what it is. Therefore the presence of this thing is a prerequisite for illusion, it is not a mental construction. Imagination is a mental phenomenon and has nothing to do with whatever really existent. Therefore the relationship between fiction and reality is completely different from that between reality and illusion. It does take some time to write a complete story for any kind of book.
In a philosophical sense that the incredible world itself could be considered fiction. That is exactly what Shakespeare perhaps meant when he wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all women and men merely players”. We might as well think of everything in the world (space, time, matter) as gamers because everything has its entry and exit. We naturally run into the issue of saying what the stage is and who wrote the script. Shakespeare likely believed in God, strict determinism, also at the truth of the world, so he did not have this issue. Now it is generally believed that the universe also has a beginning and will have an end. If the world is also a participant, are there multiple universes or does it come exclusively on the stage then presents other players? But what is the point in this case? Quantum physics points to one possibility. At extremely small scales of time and space there is a quantum emptiness that’s not really empty but full of energy that is constantly transforming itself to virtual particles and back. What remains after the conclusion of the universe may be an infinite version of this quantum emptiness full of energy into which each of the thing has transformed itself. This universal energy is the source of and background for everything.
It is not merely a philosophical point. We invest a substantial part of our own life from the imagined or fictional world. We muse about the items in long run and live over the past imagining what could have been. The creativity about the future is dependent on our hopes and aspirations and also to some extent it is a positive in the sense that we are in a position to mould our future when we sincerely attempt. But musing over the past is a futile exercise since we all know for a fact that ‘what might have been’ is mere fantasy that never happened. Nevertheless it serves the exact same function as fiction in the point of view of amusement. We entertain ourselves by imagining how life could have been, knowing fully well that it has no reality whatsoever. In a metaphorical sense past, at the distant past, is fiction. At a particular sense history itself is fiction since it always contains the subjective bias of the writer. What we know of Buddha and Jesus now is much more fiction than facts.
